Today we demonstrated the difference between longitudinal and transverse waves using a slinky. We discovered that a transverse wave involves the wave energy moving forward and the particles moving up and down, whereas a longitudinal wave involves the wave energy moving forward but the particles move backwards and forwards. We use a mexican wave to show transverse waves as our arms moved up and down. Then we formed a chain and made a longitudinal wave by pushing on the back of the person in front of us after they had pushed on our back
